The Faculty of Law at the University of Tripoli welcomes new students every year with best of wishes and success. It is pleased to present this guide to all students through which we are trying to review the most important information that would help them understand the working procedures in this institution. This scientific guide contains a summary of the educational programs, systems and regulations in force in the Faculty. Information that are relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. It introduces the academic and administrative staff from the day of establishment until this time.
The Faculty of Law was established by a decision issued by the former General People's Committee for Education on the establishment of the Nasser International University in 1986. However, it became independent in 1994 and was attached the Faculties of the University of Tripoli.
The alumni of the Faculty of Law since its establishment reached 7493 students. This number includes graduates of masters and PhD programs – more than fifteen doctoral theses and almost three hundred and eighty-one master's theses in various disciplines. The Faculty has over 84 staff members with various degrees and scientific specializations, 46 teaching assistants, and almost 48 postgraduate students who have been awarded scholarships to do doctoral theses.
The Faculty adopts a semester-based system of study, which consists of 16 weeks to finish. Each academic year consists of two semesters (Fall and Spring). Students graduate according to the timeframe set by the faculty in eight semesters.
Students take mid-term and final exams for each semester. The mid-term consists of 40 marks and the final exam consists of 60 marks. The average of the total mark that students obtain will determine their pass or fail status as per the stipulated procedures outlined in the General Regulations for Study and Examinations. Students need to pass eight semesters to be granted BA in Law.
The Faculty also grants masters and PhD degrees – according to the conditions and mechanisms described in this guide – in the various departments including Department of Criminal Law, Department of Islamic Sharia, Department of Public Law, and Department of Private Law.
The program of undergraduate studies is theoretical and organizational that is based on distributing the intended courses of study which fall within the scope of each department. Each department defines the course description as well as the elective courses. It makes decisions regarding the requests of teaching assistants and faculty members. The Department decides the need and the faculty’s capability of opening specialized degrees in higher education.
The Faculty of Law has recently opened a new branch in the city of Janzour for students in Janzour and its suburbs. This is to spare them the trouble of commuting to and from the main campus in Tripoli.
The Faculty publishes a scientific refereed journal called the "Law Journal", in which researches and scientific studies in law and Islamic law are published. It always welcomes all researchers from all over the world to send their manuscripts to the journal for publication. Further, the Criminal Law Department issues an electronic refereed scientific journal that began in 2017.
In conclusion, we wish all success students, and encourage them to influentially participate in the advancement of Libya.
Vision
The Faculty of Law envisions success in the scientific and educational processes in the field of legal sciences and its various branches. It provides the Libyan community with outputs that preserve justice, by applying the legal rules in their highest forms. This is to allow protection under rule of law for all community members. In addition, the Faculty works on developing personal capabilities in a competitive environment in order to promote its rank at the international level.
Message
The Faculty of Law works at the level of achieving the University of Tripoli’s mission. It seeks to serve the Libyan community and develop intellectual cadres in the legal field. It builds scientific competencies with a pioneering and effective role in accordance with quality standards. The Faculty, in particular, focuses on programs related to legal activity. It encourages creativity, keeps pace with research progress, familiarizes students with scientific and knowledge foundations, and develops performance of students and staff. The Faculty works on ensuring standard levels in terms of professional and ethical behavior. It establishes contacts with researchers and other law faculties to share experiences.
Goals
The Faculty of Law is a renowned edifice that occupies a top position among its counterparts. The Faculty is honored to teach a field that is among the highest ones in human studies. Alumni of the Faculty work in various positions in society. There is nothing fairer than establishing justice among individuals, monitoring their behaviors so that everyone can live in content in terms of protecting health, wealth and honor.
The Faculty seeks, among other things, to achieve the following goals:
· Graduating specialized scientific competencies in the field of legal sciences that contribute to the development of society.
· Contributing to providing advisory services in the field of law for all administrative units and public companies.
· Supplying society with legal cadres, to be the ground-base for forming a judicial elite, contributing to the realization of the right and establishing the balance of justice in society.

Staff members at the Faculty of Law are in full commitment to the ethical values and principles derived from the teachings of our true religion because of its importance in achieving our vision and thus enhancing public confidence in what the Faculty provides to the community and the international environment. The Faculty observes all ethical values and principles, and ensures a positive image to society and the world.
The Faculty of Law strengthens moral ideals and instils a spirit of citizenship in the hearts of graduates. All faculty members, employees, and students of the Faculty of Law are committed to ethical values and principles when carrying out their career and educational role inside or outside the university.
