Blood profile in normal one humped dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) camel breeds in Libya. Part 1: Determination of biochemical and haematological blood profile

As little is known about the blood profile of camels in Libya, this article is the first of a 4-part series describing the biochemical and haematological blood profile in Libyan camels. Part 1 of these manuscripts determines the values of enzymes, metabolites, electrolytes and haematological indices in the blood of Libyan camels, parts 2-4 evaluates the effects of breed, gender and age respectively on these values. In this study, blood samples were collected from sixty six camels of three different breeds, different ages and with both sex. The blood of the studied camels showed (i) average values of Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Phosphorus (Ph), Haemoglobin (Hb), Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and White Blood Cell (WBC) counts (ii) low values of Sodium (Na), Iron (Fe), total proteins, albumin, globulin, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), and low serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and amylase (AMS) enzymes and (iii) high values of glucose, urea, Red Blood Cell (RBC) counts, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). Abstract As little is known about the blood profile of camels in libya, this article is the second of a 4-part series describing the biochemical and haematological blood profile in Libyan camels. In Part 1 of these manuscripts, the overall blood biochemical and haematological mean values of camels in Libya were determined, parts 2-4 evaluates the effects of breed, gender and age respectively on these values. Blood samples were collected from three camel breeds, namely, Fakhreya, Sirtaweya and Mahari, and the levels of enzymes, metabolites, electrolytes and haematological indices were measured. The blood of the Sirtaweya breed showed (i) higher levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin and Phosphorus (Ph), than the other two breeds, (ii) higher levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), amylase (AMS) and total proteins than the Fakhreya breed and (iii) higher levels of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Calcium (Ca), Packed Cell volume (PCV), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and Albumin/Globulin (A/G) ratio than the Mahari breed. The Fakhreya breed had (i) higher levels of urea, Iron (Fe), Haemoglobin (Hb), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH) and neutrophils number than the other two breeds, (ii) higher levels of glucose, A/G, LDL, Ca, PCV, MCV and monocytes number than the Mahari breed and (iii) higher levels of erythrocyte osmotic fragility, MCH and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) than the Sirtaweya breed. The Mahari breed had (i) higher levels of globulin than the other two breeds, (ii) higher levels of AMS than the Fakhreya breed and (iii) higher levels of erythrocyte osmotic fragility, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), MCHC than the Sirtaweya breed. The tested blood parameters in the three Libyan breeds in this study were affected by breed variations. arabic 28 English 143

Repeated Projectile Impact Tests on Multi-Layered Fibrous Cementitious Composite

This research aims to experimentally evaluate the behaviour of multi-layered fibrous cementitious composites with intermediate Glass Fibre Meshes (GFM) under repeated projectile load. The impact load was subjected through a convex edge projectile needle at a low velocity on cylindrical specimens of three-layered fibrous cementitious composites, which have two different steel fibre distributions. In series A mixtures, a constant steel fibre dosage of 2.5% by volume was used. On the other hand, the fibre dosage of the outer layers was 3.0%; while it was 1.5% in the middle layer of series B mixtures. The number of intermediate GFM was the variable that distinguishes the mixtures of each series. The resistance to projectile impacts was evaluated on the basis of penetration depth, near surface distortion, weight loss, damage ratio and failure pattern. The test results showed that due to the combined effect of steel fibre and GFM, significantly lower weight losses were recorded for series A and B specimens compared with reference specimens. However, the different fibre distributions (series B) led to lower penetration depths and weight losses with less surface distortion compared with the fixed fibre distribution (series A). The reduction in the destroyed front surface area of series A specimens compared with reference specimens ranged from 27.8 to 38.1%; while that of series B specimens ranged from 34.8 to 53.4%. In addition, a simplified analytical model was introduced to predict the ejected composite mass. The model predictions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental masses. arabic 9 English 71

Palm Oil Fuel Ash-Based Eco-Efficient Concrete: A Critical Review of the Short-Term Properties

The huge demand for concrete is predicted to upsurge due to rapid construction devel- opments. Environmental worries regarding the large amounts of carbon dioxide emanations from cement production have resulted in new ideas to develop supplemental cementing materials, aiming to decrease the cement volume required for making concrete. Palm-oil-fuel-ash (POFA) is an indus- trial byproduct derived from palm oil waste’s incineration in power plants’ electricity generation. POFA has high pozzolanic characteristics. It is highly reactive and exhibits satisfactory micro-filling ability and unique properties. POFA is commonly used as a partially-alternated binder to Portland cement materials to make POFA-based eco-efficient concrete to build building using a green material. This paper presents a review of the material source, chemical composition, clean production and short-term properties of POFA. A review of related literature provides comprehensive insights into the potential application of POFA-based eco-efficient concrete in the construction industry today. arabic 16 English 78

As little is known about the blood profile of camels in Libya, this article is the third of a 4-part series describing the biochemical and haematological blood profile in Libyan camels. In part 1 of these manuscripts, the overall blood biochemical and haematological mean values of camels in Libya were determined, parts 2-4 evaluate the effects of breed, gender and age respectively on these values. Blood samples were collected from 24 male and 42 female apparently healthy camels and the levels of enzymes, metabolites, electrolytes and haematological indices were measured. The blood of the male camels showed higher values of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Amylase (AMS), total proteins, globulin and Phosphorus (Ph), than the female camels which showed higher values of glucose, Albumin/Globulin (A/G) ratio, urea, Iron (Fe), Calcium (Ca), Packed Cell volume (PCV), Haemoglobin (Hb), erythrocyte osmotic fragility, Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), neutrophil and monocyte numbers. This study shows significant sex differences between male and female Libyan camels in many haematological and biochemical analytes. arabic 28 English 141

Effect of Doping with Cobber on Optical Properties of Zinc Oxide Thin Films Prepared by So-Gel Method

Thin films of cobber doped ZnO have been prepared on glass substrate using the Sol-Gel spin coating technique. The effect of doping percentage of Cu to ZnO thin films on the optical properties and optical constants are concluded from absorption and transmission measurements which are obtained by using double beam UV-Visible 1800 spectrophotometer in the wavelength (300-800)nm. It was found that the transmittance increases with increasing the doping percentage (0.01, 0.02,0.03 and 0.04)mol%, while the Absorbance is decreased. The optical energy band gaps have been evaluated and their values seem to be decreased by increasing the doping concentration level in the range (0.01, 0.02, 0.03)mol% followed by a rise with increasing the doping level to 0.04mol%. arabic 17 English 84

Optical Properties of Pure Zinc Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Sol-Gel Method

Thin films of pure ZnO have been prepared on glass substrate using the Sol–Gel spin coating technique. Transmittance and absorbance spectra have been measured by using double beam UV-Visible 1800 spectrophotometer in the wavelength range (300-800)nm. It was found that the absorbance decreases with increasing the wavelength, while the transmittance increases with rising the wavelength. The transmittance exceeds 90% in the visible light region and in the near-infrared. The obtained results have shown that intrinsic ZnO is a semiconductor of wide optical energy band gap estimated to be 3.33eV. Furthermore, some optical properties and optical constants have been calculated from absorption and transmission measurements such as absorption coefficient, Urbach energy, extinction coefficient, refractive index and dielectric constant. arabic 12 English 63
