A Review of Libyan Soil Databases for Use within an Ecosystem Services Framework

Ecosystem services (ESs) are increasingly being used by many countries around the world as a framework for addressing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This review article of the usability of Libyan soil databases for ESs and SDGs is the first of its kind for North Africa. The objectives of the article are to: describe the available soil resources of Libya in relation to an ES framework; provide examples of the usability of Libyan soil databases for ES applications (eg, provisioning, Healthy Eating Plate), and describe some of the typical disservices in the country. Desertification, salinization, and limited freshwater resources are the largest challenges (disservices) for agriculture and future development in Libya. Seawater intrusion in coastal areas due to rising sea levels has resulted in high concentrations of salts in irrigation waters, which can lead to low soil productivity. These challenges can be addressed by integrating Libyan soil resources into a market that transforms resources into goods and services to meet human demand in a sustainable manner, with non-market institutions mediating the interactions between humans and the environment. If Libyan soil resources are taken into account by both market and non-market institutions, it will lead to more efficient use of soil resources and also should enable the implementation of innovative strategies, such as integrated farming systems, non-soil-based agricultural production (eg, hydroponics), and alternative farming practices. arabic 12 English 68

Assessment of spatial and temporal variations of soil salinity using remote sensing and geographic information system in Libya

Soil salinity is one of the most important issues in arid and semi arid regions, which is directly linked to desertification and land degradation. Several studies related to soil and water salinity assessment, and mapping were conducted in Libya using traditional methods. However, they covered only the time of measurements and did not address the dynamic nature of salinity process. In addition, they lack cost and time effectiveness. Therefore, there is pressing need to use a high tech method that is cost, time and labor effective to assess the change in soil salinity in north- west of Libya. The aim of this paper is to identify the change in saline soils (Sehbkha) using Remote Sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. Land Sat Satellite images data were acquired for 29 years (1972-1987-2001) to assess the pattern of change. The result revealed that there was a decrease saline soils area ( Sbehbka). Keywords: Libya, GIS, Remote Sensing, Soil, Soil Salinity, Sebkha. arabic 17 English 109

SEMANTIC/SYNTACTIC DISHARMONY & IMPLICATIONS ON QUALITY OF TRANSLATING MEDICAL TEXTS

This paper aims at identifying aspects of disharmony between semantic and syntactic features that result in meaningless medical translated sentences. A special focus is given to Chomsky’s Transformational Generative Theory (T.G. Grammar) that extrapolates the correlation between deep structure (which determines the semantic features of a sentence) and the surface structure (which determines the syntactic structure of a sentence), putting in consideration the importance of achieving harmony between meaning and structure to produce meaningful and accurate translation of the source text (ST) resulting in an acceptable final product (target Text). The investigation of this study also relies on the concept of ‘Selectional Restrictions’ which suggests that certain sets of verbs stand with agreement with certain sets of subjects/objects that subsequently lead to the production of semantically acceptable sentences. Accordingly, it is imperative to touch upon aspects related to the Componential Analysis Theory where the meaning of a word is expressed with the assistance of (+) and (-) markers. I consider this study to be unique and innovative as it applies such prominent semantic theories, for the first time, with the craft of translation, offering real concrete examples extracted from practical translation tasks performed by students of Translation Dept., Faculty of Languages- University of Tripoli. Worth mentioning, that a piece of a translation is proved to be correct when semantic/syntactic harmony is achieved and where the message of the source text (ST) is being effectively communicated in the target text (TT). On the contrary, any disharmony between deep/surface structures found would seriously undermine the quality and correctness of a translation product. Key Words: Source Text (ST) - Target Text (TT) – Deep Structure – Surface structure - Selectional restrictions arabic 11 English 73

Face color effect on growth rate of Libyan Barbary lambs

Egyptian Journal of sheep & Goat Sciences Vol. 5, (1) P: 111-101 (2010) Face color effect on growth rate of Libyan Barbary lambs. Ahtash, A. ; Hermas, S. ; Azaga, I. and Kurdi, A. Abstract The Libyan Barbary sheep Dynasty marked to bear range harsh conditions such as severe lack of rain in some seasons and the high temperature and therefore its ability to improve productivity in good environmental conditions. The Libyan Barbary sheep generally have a white body color with white or black built or patches on the head and legs. This study aimed to assess the possible effect of face color on growth rate of Libyan Barbary sheep towards developing improved lines of Barbary sheep according to face color. The study included also the effect of some other factors such as year, sex, birth type and age of mother on growth characteristics. This study was carried out at Bir El Ghanem Research Station located 80 km southwest of Tripoli. The breeding system in this station extend according to range availability and presence of rain, where sheep grazed during morning and return by the end of the day. Animals fed on concentrate feed (14% protein) and barley or wheat straw pasture during the summer months. Growth rate records for lambs born during the season 2002 and 2003 were used as a base to divide according to face color. Results show the overall means of birth weight (3.66 kg) and weaning weight (31.48 kg). Statistical analysis revealed non-significant influence of face color on birth weight of lambs during all seasons, while its effect on weaning weight of lambs was significant. Lambs which was addressed to black face color had the heaviest weight. The factors year, sex and type of birth have significant effects on birth weight, weaning weight and weight before and after weaning, where differences varied from year to year. Male lambs were heavier than female lambs and single lambs was heavier than the twins. Therefore, it is worth wise to suggest using face-color as a base to select lines specialized in the production of meat. The results of this study stressed the significance of remaining non-genetic factors like sex, type and year of birth. arabic 9 English 47

The Technique of of Calque in the Translation of Political Discourse

The study deals with the problem of the excessive presence of literally translated expressions (Calques) in Arabic political Media. Although Calque is considered to be a recognized technique in translation, yet it is not a good solution in many cases. After a detailed account of various techniques and procedures presented by pioneering translation theoreticians, with special focus on those who have dealt with the technique of Calaque, the study puts us against the disappointing reality lying behind the political discourse as being a tool of ‘truth manipulation’, and how far this discourse employs certain means to achieve its goals. Based on two separate questionnaires, a number of results and conclusions have been reached. The study concludes that the usage of the Calque techniqueis considered as an inappropriate procedure in some cases, when it will result in some structural and ideologically problematic expressions coming into surface. The study emphasizes, as well, the negative effects of the excessive presence of calques on the target language’s listener /reader, besides the positive ones. On the other hand, it recommends that the translator should resort to other techniques, by which the problematic cases could be avoided. arabic 10 English 58
